DVD Educational Resource Pack

Streetwise DVD educational resource pack

What is it? The pack  is an all in one teaching resource, including a DVD and a written resource for teachers or youth workers to use with secondary school pupils as part of the PSCHE (Personal, Social, Citizenship and Health Education) curriculum. The pack focuses on issues such as bullying, substance misuse, relationships, personal safety, image and racism and antisemitism.

The DVD – Young people talking to young people

The DVD scenes contain young people from our drama production, ‘Open Your Eyes’, which was performed in May 2005. Each scene on the DVD acts as a trigger for activities in the written resource.

The Written Resource-

The written resource is a comprehensive pack. It contains clear instructions for teachers and worksheets that can be easily photocopied. Additionally, correspondence to the PSCHE curriculum and the required resources are clarified at the start of each section. Streetwise have also worked with several organisations, such as Frank drugs line and the Eating Disorders Association UK. Contact details are provided from all of these help organisations, which are useful for teachers, youth workers and the young people.

The DVD and written resource was launched in schools and clubs at the beginning of the school year (2006-2007) and so far the following schools and clubs have already started to use the pack and we have some very good reports! More schools and clubs are using the pack as we speak!

 Hasmonean Girls

On Wednesday 1st February, Mrs.Waldman, head of year nine, lead our first pilot session on image with a group of twenty five year nine girls. The session focused on eating disorders and the pressure on young people to conform to a certain image. The young people were very engaged and were even happy to run into their break. Their problem page answers were most impressive! Thank you to Mrs.Waldman and her class for their cooperation and enthusiasm.

Chigwell Maccabi

On the evening of Wednesday 1st February, Odette Mackay and Sandra Waldman, lead our pilot session on personal safety, with thirty young people in years 7-11. The young people responded well to the session and were excited to see a member of their club, Kim Mather, starring in the DVD. Well done to all the young people for identifying so many personal safety hazards and for working well in groups! Thank you to Odette and Sandra and all the young people at Chigwell Maccabi.

Immanuel College

On Thursday 2nd February, Mrs.Kerr, head of pastoral care, ran a session on Israel with twenty year ten girls. The girls seemed to enjoy the session and created some entertaining and informative role plays, based on techniques for responding to criticism. Thank you to Mrs.Kerr and her class for their cooperation and enthusiasm. We are due to observe two more sessions this week on substance misuse with year eleven boys.
