Yr 6 Transition Programmes
Streetwise have been running our Yr 6 Transition to Secondary School programme in our Jewish day schools since the end of June and so far all our sessions have been really wonderful.
Hearing the thoughts of our year 6 students on their big move to secondary school next year is inspiring. Many are open and honest about how they feel, with some explaining they are worried about travelling alone on public transport, meeting new people in school, saying goodbye to their old friends from their primary schools and wondering how they will find their way around their new campus!
Many students are extremely excited as well about their new move with students looking forward to new friends, learning to feel confident, having more responsibility, school lunches, more facilities, being able to join clubs and learn many new subjects.
We hope that all the year 6 students have enjoyed the session as we have been receiving some very positive feedback.
We look forward to continuing our work with you.
Streetwise & JAT run sessions at Yavneh
Claire and Libby our streetwise project workers, together with Neil and Ros from JAT attended Yavneh to run a programme on ‘Healthy Living & Media Images’. Year 7 were divided into groups, each attending a session on Healthy Living with Libby or Claire and the JAT session on ‘Body Image’ in the media.
In the Streetwise session participants learnt about the 5 different food groups and how we are able to incorporate not just healthy food into our daily life but also exercise and a positive attitude as well! There was some jogging on the spot and star jumps, as well as organizing a ‘day plan’ full of good food and activities.
The session run by JAT focused on body image, as well as how it is portrayed in the media. Students discussed the changes young people go through as they get older, how each and every one of us is different and how celebrities are shown in magazines. JAT reinforced the point together with students that it is not just about ‘how we look’, and most importantly each and every one of us has many good points!
JFS LIFESKILLS FEBRUARY YR 8 HALF TERM COURSE
On 14th and 15th of February, 18 young people took part on a Bronze Streetwise course. The group gelled very quickly and really enjoyed all the games that the Streetwise leaders played to help them get to know each other. During the busy two day course the young people had four personal safety sessions where they learned some basic Krav Maga (self defence) and looked at other aspects of their personal safety. They also participated in four personal development sessions where they explored subjects such as self-awareness, friendships, antisemitism and bullying. One young person’s comment on the session about bullying was, ‘I learnt so much - it was a session that really applied to me.’ Another young person said that it was, ‘A very fun course to do on half-term.
The week before on February 6th and 7th year seven pupils participated in our Lifeskills sessions. Streetwise delivered sessions about the dangers of smoking. Each session lasted an hour and the young people participated in three different activities. The session provided interesting facts about smoking, information about the chemicals in cigarettes and an opportunity for the pupils to express their views on smoking and ask questions. Pupils were engaged in the workshops and feedback from teachers was positive. There were also two other Jewish organisations involved. JAT delivered sessions about relationships and boundaries and Jewish Women’s Aid delivered sessions on bullying and respect. Overall the pupils responded well to the structure of the day and many of them expressed that they were pleased to have a safe, open environment in which to discuss different life issues. During the academic year, Streetwise look forward to participating in the year eight and year nine lifeskills days at JFS.
