antisemitism
Growing up as a young Jewish person means that we are part of a very big community, worldwide, with lots of positive messages through education and experiences. But we sometimes have negative experiences that are connected to the fact that 'we are Jewish'. This is called 'Antisemitism'.
WHAT IS ANTISEMITISM? Antisemitism is used to refer to situations, which involve either people or property, and are selected purely because they are, or are perceived to be, Jewish.
How do we combat Antisemitism? If you are the victim of an antisemitic attack, whether physical or verbal, you should report the incident to the CST. The CST ensures the safety and security of the Jewish community in Britain, and collates information regarding antisemitism in this country. You can also call the Police on 999 and report the incident.
QUIZ (Answer the following multiple choice questions and see below for correct answers!)
1) What do you do if you see some anti-Jewish graffiti on your shul wall?
a) Run into the shul and tell the Rabbi or caretaker? b) Wash off the graffiti from the wall? c) Call the CST and take a photo of the graffiti with your mobile phone or camera as evidence.
The correct answer is: C It is important not to wash off the evidence and to call the CST first. Of course you are able to tell the Rabbi or caretaker of the shul, but ensure that the CST is called and informed of this crime. It is also good if you can take a picture of the graffiti in order to keep for evidence as this may help the CST solve the crime.
2) You are on the bus on the way to school and a student from a non-Jewish school pushes you and whispers 'JEW'. Do you:
a) Push him back b) get off the bus at the next stop, phone your mother or father and tell them what happened. c) When you get to school tell a teacher and call the CST.
The correct answer is: B or C You can either get off the bus if you feel uncomfortable and in danger and call your parents or if you feel ok, once you get to school, tell a teacher or the principal and make sure you phone the CST to report the incident.
It is important not to fight anyone and get into any dangerous environments. Always look after yourself and put yourself into safe situations.
